2019 Toyota 4Runner Specs, Price, Release Dates
The 2019 Toyota 4Runner SUV increasingly looks different amidst the popularity of SUV crossover. It’s not based on a car platform, instead, it using body-on-frame construction, putting it in a category known as “Old School.” But the 4Runner midsize SUV remains strong and very capable on difficult terrain. The Nissan Pathfinder or Ford Explorer? That’s nothing compared to 4Runner’s ability in the wild. It also enjoys Toyota well-known reliability.
The only engine for the 2019 Toyota 4Runner is a smooth 4.0-liter V6 making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, which feels like enough gears if you haven’t driven the eight- and nine- and ten-speeds. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard in the SR5 and Limited versions. A part-time all-wheel drive (AWD) system is available for the SR5 models, while a full-time AWD setup with a limited-slip locking center differential is offered in the Limited. The 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road and TRD Pro Series models only come with 4WD. The TRD Pro is serious, with Bilstein shocks having remote reservoirs, Nitto all-terrain tires, TRD front springs, skid plates, exclusive wheels, and TRD trim and badging.

Standard & Optional Equipment
The 2019 Toyota 4Runner available in seven trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited and Limited Nightshade. The base SR5 get Entune Audio Plus with the Connected Navigation app and Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth music streaming, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. The Limited models have 20-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated front seat, moonroof, and an X-REAS (cross-linked relative absorber system) suspension for better body control. The TRD models come standard with all-wheel drive plus water-resistant seat fabric, locking rear differential, and multi-terrain selection with crawl control. TRD Pro receives a 15-speaker JBL sound system, navigation, and the Fox suspension.
All-wheel drive is optional in the SR5. Other extras include the 3rd-row seat and a handy sliding cargo deck, while the off-road specialist TRD versions are also available with the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that can disconnect the stabilizer bars to allow more axle travel and therefore help conquer tougher terrain.
Overall, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner interior is nice, but still less refined than the Explorer or Dodge Durango. The cabin isn’t fancy but it’s detailed well, with simple and sensible controls that are chunky yet still precise. Unlike the exterior, the interior avoids chrome. There are fewer controls on the centerstack, because the offroad controls are overhead. The steering wheel has audio and Bluetooth buttons.
The front seats are wide and supportive, and with the optional perforated leather, they look great and are comfortable for long trips. Second row passengers will find decent room at the outboard seats, a flop-down armrest, and backrests that adjust 16 degrees. Three abreast is a bit tight, but not unreasonable.
A third row is available for the SR5 and Limited trim, but it’s difficult to climb back there. It folds flat when not in use, leaving a fat 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space; or with the second row folded, there’s 90 cubic feet. A sliding floor that pulls out for easy loading is optional, and popular. It takes just one cubic foot of cargo space, and is a relief, given the height of the floor. The 2019 Toyota 4Runner don’t have a power tailgate, but they do have a useful power rear window. It’s nice for tossing in small items, and pleasant to drive with the window down around town.
