2019 Jeep Cherokee Specs, Release Date, Price
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee strengthens Jeep SUV lineup as a unique proportion in the compact-SUV class. While established models such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and all the other players in the segment concentrate on around-town utility, the Cherokee remains loyal to its Jeep nature with the superb off-road capable Trailhawk model. It was a good move, and the Trailhawk Cherokee stood out on terrain that would make its competitors run to soft, smooth asphalt. But the Cherokee isn’t one trick SUV, it offers a V6 engine that can tow up to 4,500 pounds and a new turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes the Cherokee feel fresh. If you want a comfortable around-town ride and still want to hit rough terrain, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee should be on your top list.
The standard engine for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee continues to be a 2.4-liter SOHC four-cylinder, 180 horsepower, 170 pound-feet of torque, and the traditional upgrade continues to be the equally familiar 3.2-liter V6 (271 hp, 239 lb-ft). Shared with the new Jeep Wrangler, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four (270 hp, 295 lb-ft) also joins the option list. All three engines are paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and two levels of four-wheel drive are available.
Despite the turbo’s big edge in torque, the V6 is the towing champ, rated up to 4500 pounds. The turbo maxes out at 4000 pounds. All three engines have stop/start technology. The 2.4-liter four and 3.2-liter V6 run on regular fuel, while the new turbocharged 2.0-liter requires premium.
EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee: 23 mpg city/31 mpg Highway and 26 mpg Combined with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and front-wheel drive, 21/29/24 with all-wheel drive; 22/31/25 mpg for the 2.4-liter automatic, 21/29/24 with all-wheel drive. The 3.2-liter V6 rates 20/29/23 mpg. A Trailhawk 4WD V6 is rated 18/24/21. The turbocharged engine requires Premium gasoline. The 2.4-liter engine can use less-expensive Regular, while the V6 likes at least Midgrade.
Notable Standard & Optional Equipment
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, 7-inch Uconnect 4 screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, three USB ports, and the display for the rearview camera. Along with hill-start assist and start/stop, the Latitude also comes with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-path detection standard. There’s also standard air conditioning, 6-way manually adjustable seats covered in durable cloth, a black-and-white digital info display between the gauges, and keyless entry. If you get all-wheel drive, Jeep Selec-Terrain traction-management system is part of the package.
The most obvious options are related to the drivetrain. The base 4-cylinder can be skipped for the V6 or the new turbocharged 4-cylinder. Various AWD systems are also available, with the Jeep Active Drive Lock reserved for Trailhawk models. Other options come as you climb the trim ladder. Limited models get a larger Uconnect screen, leather upholstery and power driver and passenger seats. The luxurious Overland comes standard with the 3.2-liter V6, plus navigation, an upgraded audio system, and generally nicer interior trim. The trail-rated Trailhawk model adds under-body skidplates, a more aggressive AWD system, upgraded suspension, and other enhancements to make it more capable off road.
Updates inside the 2019 Jeep Cherokee are subtle: improved materials, new color-coordinated decor with fancy names such as Storm Blue, and new trim details such as piano black plastic and satin chrome. The center console has been redesigned and shifted slightly rearward, creating a space for stashing a cell phone near a USB port, enhancing connectivity. There’s also a 115-volt outlet, as well as the latest version of FCA’s Uconnect infotainment system.
Available premium touches include heated and ventilated seats clad in Nappa leather and a heated steering wheel. Approach your locked Cherokee with the key fob and it’ll automatically unlock when you try to open the door. For 2019, Jeep has designed more volume into the rear cargo area, which expands to 26 cubic feet, wide enough to accommodate a pair of golf bags lying side by side, according to Jeep. With the rear seats folded flat, max cargo is 55 cubic feet.
