More than just a good car, the 2018 Volvo XC90 drives well, has precision handling, and is stable on the road. It has plenty of space inside and abundant high-tech safety features, both available as standard equipment or as an option.
Trim and Features
The 2018 Volvo XC90 is a luxury crossover SUV with three seating configurations: four-passenger (T8 Excellence only), five-passenger (T5) and seven-passenger (T6 and T8). It offered in four trim levels Momentum, R-Design, Inscription and Excellence.
Standard equipment for the T5 Momentum includes keyless entry and ignition, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights, a power tailgate, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, lane departure warning, driver-seat memory settings, eight-way power front seats with lumbar adjustment, faux leather upholstery, 40/20/40-split second-row seats with slide and recline functions, and a 50/50-split third-row seat.
Technology features include adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist semiautonomous driving mode, a navigation system, a 9-inch central touchscreen, voice controls, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity and a 10-speaker sound system with a USB port and satellite radio.

The 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 and T8 Momentum get 19-inch wheels, four-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather upholstery, third-row seating and a larger digital driver information display. T8 Momentum also receives LED adaptive headlights and interior illumination.
The 2018 Volvo XC90 R-Design adds 20-inch alloy wheels, unique exterior accents and grille, aluminum mesh cabin accents, illuminated step plates, a sport steering wheel with shift paddles, leather upholstery and upgraded sport seats.
The 2018 Volvo XC90 Inscription (only T6 and T8) is similar to the R-Design but gets its own wheels, exterior and interior trim plus rear side window shades, heated front seats, upgraded leather upholstery and ventilated front seats with adjustable side bolsters.
The 2018 Volvo XC90 T8 Excellence adds an adaptive air suspension, 21-inch wheels, bright exterior trim, additional sound deadening, extended leather upholstery, two captain chairs with footrests, a rear center console with folding trays, two crystal glasses, heated and cooled cupholders, a touchscreen controller, a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a refrigerator and a rear seat USB ports.
A various package is available for the 2018 Volvo XC90. The Momentum Plus package adds headlight washers, adaptive headlights, the larger driver display, interior illumination and illuminated step plates. The Convenience package adds automated parking assist, a surround-view camera, front parking sensors, heated windshield washer nozzles, a 12-volt power outlet and a grocery bag holder. The Luxury package (Inscription only) adds a simulated suede headliner, fronts seats with massaging function, heated rear seats, leather sun visors and grab handles.
The individual option includes an adaptive air suspension, 20-22-inch wheels, a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, a built-in second-row child booster seat and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
The 2018 Volvo XC90 T5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. You can choose either front or all-wheel drive and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Volvo estimates that it will hit 60 mph in 7.9 seconds with AWD and 7.5 seconds with FWD. Both are below average for three-row luxury crossover. EPA fuel economy stands at 25 mpg combined (22 city/29 highway), while AWD at 24 mpg combined (22/28).
The 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 gets 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine generates 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive comes standard. Volvo claims the T6 will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy checks in at an impressive 23 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway).
The 2018 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid combining the XC90 T6 engine with an 87-hp electric motor. Together they produce 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. Volvo says the XC90 plug-in hybrid will accelerate to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. EPA estimates electric range at 14 miles and 25 mpg combined in standard hybrid mode. With a 240-volt charging station, fully recharging the pack takes only about 2.5 hours.
