After receiving significant improvements last year in styling, safety aids and cabin comfort, the 2018 Subaru Forester brings minor changes. The most highlighted is the new 2.5i Black Edition, which adds black body trim, wheels, grill and extends into the cabin with a black cloth upholstery and black gloss dash trim.
Previous updates include features such as blind-spot monitoring and reverse automatic braking, quieter cabin, and interior options such as Saddle Brown leather, helping the Forester to compete more in its class.
Trim and Features
The 2018 Subaru Forester is a five-passenger compact crossover with off-road capability. There are six trim levels available: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Touring, 2.0XT Premium and 2.0XT Touring.
Standard equipment for the base 2.5i includes 17-inch steel wheels, a height-adjustable driver seat, cloth upholstery, a 60/40-split folding rear seatback, a rearview camera, a driver information display, smartphone app integration, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with Subaru Starlink technology interface, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and a four-speaker sound system.
Optional for the base 2.5i CVT is an Alloy Wheel package that includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic up-down front windows and roof rails.
All those items are standard on the 2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium, but also adds a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, power driver seat, reclining rear seats, voice commands, larger 7-inch touchscreen, Starlink Safety Plus telematics and an upgraded six-speaker sound system with satellite radio.
The All-Weather package is standard on 2.5i Premium trims with a manual transmission but an extra-cost option on CVT models. It adds heated side mirrors and heated front seats. The EyeSight safety package (need All-Weather package) adds forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and intervention, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. A version of this package is available with adjustable-height power liftgate and foglights.
The 2.5i Premium Black Edition adds CVT, All Weather package plus 18-inch black wheels, hill descent control, X-Mode enhanced off-road traction, foglights, automatic and adaptive headlights, automatic high-beam, a black exterior trim, grille and black cloth upholstery.
The 2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i Limited get the Black Edition features plus 17-inch wheels, a power liftgate, a cargo area cover, an upgraded driver information display, leather upholstery, rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring.
Optional for the Limited is a Technology package that adds a navigation and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The Limited EyeSight package includes all features from the Premium’s EyeSight package, reverse automatic braking, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high-beam control, navigation, upgraded sound system.
The 2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i Touring gets the EyeSight package, keyless ignition and entry, 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, upgraded side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, driver-seat memory settings, one-touch folding rear seatbacks, navigation and an upgraded sound system.
The 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Premium get the 2.5i Premium plus equipment plus 18-inch alloy wheels, larger brakes, a sport-tuned suspension, shift paddles, additional selectable driving modes, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the All-Weather package. The EyeSight package is not available in this model.
The 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Touring is the same as the 2.5i Touring but also adds a power liftgate with adjustable height settings.
All the 2018 Subaru Forester comes standard with all-wheel drive. The 2.5i models are powered by a 2.5-liter flat-four engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) available as optional. EPA estimated fuel economy stands at 24 mpg combined (22 city/28 highway) for the manual and (28/26/32) for CVT.
The 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0XT is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard. In performance testing, the Forester 2.0XT accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. EPA fuel economy rating at 25 mpg combined (23 city/27 highway).
