Mercedes-Benz redesigned the E-Class wagon last year. These models borrow a lot from the flagship S-Class sedan with amazing results. In addition to the elegant interior design and perfect material, the new E-Class also benefits from all the latest advanced safety features that keep Mercedes at the forefront.
Benz has also brought back the high-performance E63 AMG models. Now called the AMG E63 S, it packs more power and torque than the new turbocharged V8 which is also more efficient.
Inside, the E-Class now has the same excellent luxury aesthetics. As we expected, there are a large number of features available, including the latest nearly autonomous driver features. Whether you appreciate performance, comfort or technology in a midsize luxury wagon, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class must be at the top of your list.
For 2018, the E-Class wagon welcomes a new trim level, the high-performance AMG E63 S. Finally, the base E400 receive additional standard and optional equipment this year.
Trim levels and features
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a seven-passenger midsize luxury wagon that comes in two trim levels: E400 and AMG E63 S.
Standard equipment for the E-Class E400 includes 18-inch alloy wheels, an adaptive suspension, automatic wipers, LED headlights, a sunroof, power liftgate, power-folding mirrors with heating, dual-zone automatic climate control, selectable drive modes, driver-seat memory functions, power-adjustable front seats, premium simulated leather upholstery and 40/20/40-split folding rear seats. Standard tech features include a rearview camera, a 12.3-inch display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation system, voice controls, Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system with a touchpad controller, a Bluetooth, two USB ports and HD radio.
Sport and Luxury versions are available for the E400. The Sport get special styling details, bigger wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and brakes. The Luxury gets a different grille, some additional wheel choices and upgraded upholstery.
For the most part, all variants share optional package availability. The Premium 1 package adds keyless entry, rear cross-traffic alert, an automated parallel and perpendicular parking system, heated front seats, satellite radio, a wireless phone charger and a Burmester surround-sound system. The Premium 2 package includes the Premium 1 package content plus adaptive headlights with automatic high-beams, and a perfumed air freshener system.
The Premium 3 package includes all of the above along with active blind-spot assistance, forward collision and rear cross-traffic warnings and mitigation, a surround-view camera system, a speed-limit sign reader, evasive steering assist, adaptive cruise control with steering and lane-change assist, a head-up display and Pre-Safe side and rear impact preparation.
The Warmth and Comfort package adds an adaptive air-ride suspension, additional sound and solar insolation, a panoramic sunroof, an upgraded gauge cluster display, tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, rear side airbags, active multi-contour front seats with massage functions, a premium Burmester sound systems and rapid heating for upper door panels, steering wheel, front seats and heated front armrests. Various upholstery and trim options are also available.
The AMG E63 S gets a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, a limited-slip rear differential, AMG powertrain and suspension components, AMG sport-tuned suspension and braking, AMG-specific interior and exterior pieces, blind-spot monitoring, keyless entry, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats. It also comes standard with several of the E400’s optional features. The E63 S can be added with carbon-ceramic brakes.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 Wagon 4Matic is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that generates 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. In performance testing, the E400 Wagon went to 60 mph from zero in 5.3 seconds, which is quicker than most competitors. EPA fuel economy rating at 21 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway).
Under its hood, the 2018 AMG E63 S is powered by AMG-developed turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and produces 603 hp and 627 lb-ft. Its get a specially AMG-tuned suspension component and 9-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting mode. Mercedes estimates it will reach 60 mph in extremely rapid 3.4 seconds. EPA fuel economy is rated at 18 mpg combined (16 city/22 highway).
All 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon also feature with an automatic stop-start technology, which shut off the engine in order to save fuel.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon adopts a similar interior design as the flagship S-Class with a bold horizontal layout that extends from door to door. The central infotainment screen extends from the instrument panel, which can be selected with virtual instead of analog gauges. Like the S-Class, the E-Class interior has excellent material throughout and perfect craftsmanship.
The passenger space is similar to most other competitors in the class in terms of headroom, shoulder room and legroom. Seat comfort is also excellent, especially with the optional multi-contour seats. Behind the rear seat. there are 22.6 13.1 cubic feet of cargo capacity and expand to 64.2 cubic feet, depending on how you set up the rear seats.
The standard Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system now features the latest interface that includes a touchpad hovering over the central dial. The touchpad allows users to use smartphone-like gestures to control the system, as well as alphanumeric input by searching with your fingertips. It’s not easy to use when driving, but the dial is just as intuitive as before.

Official pricing for the E400 wagon starts at $64,045. The high-performances AMG E63 S costs at least 106,950.
