With a flexible suspension and strong V6 engine, the 2018 Jeep Cherokee is prepared for everyday work.
But there are some drawbacks, such as the lackluster standard four-cylinder engine and the lack of cargo space. But if you’re looking for an affordable crossover SUV that can comfortably deliver you work for a week and off-rad on weekends, the 2018 Jeep Cherokee is a better choice.
Trim, Features and Engine Specs
The 2018 Jeep Cherokee is a small crossover SUV available in five trim levels: Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, off-road-focused Trailhawk and Overland.
Standard equipment for the base Latitude includes xenon headlights, 17-inch wheels, height-adjustable front seats, a folding front passenger seat with a storage compartment, reclining and sliding rear seats with 60/40-split folding seatbacks, a 5-inch touchscreen interface, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a USB charge-only port and a six-speaker audio system.
The 2018 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus adds keyless entry and ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power driver seat, ambient interior lighting, leather inserts in the upholstery, a 115-volt outlet, an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system and satellite radio. A passive keyless entry with push-button starting is also standard.

The off-road-oriented Trailhawk adds an advanced all-wheel-drive system (Active Drive II) plus unique exterior trim, all-terrain tires, wider 17-inch wheels, off-road-oriented suspension tuning, increased ground clearance, hill ascent and descent control, a locking rear differential, tow hooks, skid plates and parking sensors.
Inside, you’ll get dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped shift knob, cloth and leather upholstery, a larger driver information display, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic detection, 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen interface with smartphone-app integration, Siri Eyes Free, a USB audio interface and satellite radio.
The 2018 Jeep Cherokee Limited get the Trailhawk standard convenience features plus 18-inch alloy wheels, a wiper de-icer, remote ignition, upgraded power-folding side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, a larger driver information display, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a power driver seat, leather upholstery, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, a power liftgate and parking sensors.
The Overland gets a unique body-color exterior trim, 18-inch wheels, cornering lights, sound-deadening windshield and front windows, wood steering-wheel inserts, a leather-wrapped instrument panel, driver-seat memory functions, ventilated front seats, upgraded leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, a navigation system, a nine-speaker audio system and HD radio.
Most of the upper trims features are available on lower trims via stand-alone or optional packages. The Trailer Tow group package includes Class III hitch, a stand-alone transmission cooler, trailer wiring harness for both four- and seven-pin systems and a full-size spare. V6- models also get additional engine cooling.
The Technology group package available for the Limited, Trailhawk and Overland trims. It adds auto high-beam headlights, automatic wipers, radar-based cruise control, a forward collision warning with crash mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and an automatic parking system.
The 2018 Jeep Cherokee is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine generates 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. An optional 3.2-liter V6 engine makes 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard for both engines.
You can choose either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, but the Trailhawk models are 4WD only. The 2018 Jeep Cherokee offers two 4WD systems. Standard on Latitude and Limited models is the light-duty Active Drive I 4WD system, it does not require input from the driver, though it does come with a Selec-Terrain dial that has different terrain modes. Standard on the Trailhawk and Overland and optional on the Limited is the Active Drive II system, which has low-range gearing and a locking rear differential along with an additional Rock mode for the Selec-Terrain dial.
In performance testing, the 2018 Jeep Cherokee Limited V6 with Active Drive I accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, a good time for a small crossover with an upgraded engine. The optional towing package gives V6 models a 4,500-pound towing capacity
EPA fuel economy for the four-cylinder engine with FWD rated at 25 mpg combined (21 city/30 highway) and (23/21/28) for 4WD. The V6 FWD rated at 24 mpg combined (21 city/29 highway) and (23/20/27). The Cherokee Trailhawk four-cylinder stand at (22/19/25) and (21/18/24) with the V6.
The 2018 Jeep Cherokee cabin has high-quality look and design, especially on higher trim. The 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen is not the newest system in this class, but still adequate thanks to the easy-to-navigate menu, the large virtual buttons and accompanying knobs that make it easy to select on long lists.
The 2018 Jeep Cherokee is also passenger friendly. It’s easy to get comfort in driver power seats, which offer quite a lot of adjustments. Manual front seats also comes with height adjustment for the driver and passengers. The 2018 Jeep Cherokee also features one of the best back seats in the class. Not only recline, but also can slide fore and rear, and the mounted pads support the adult’s thighs without pushing their heads to the roof.
Unfortunately, the 2018 Jeep Cherokee falls in cargo capacity. There are only 24.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 54.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The numbers is 5 to 15 cubic feet less than that offered by other small SUV. Another drawback is the lack of useful storage space at the front for personal items.
