The 2018 Jaguar XF is a mid-sized luxury sedan that is a different option among the popular and flooded German brands. It may not produce very high-performance, but its lightweight aluminum chassis and suspension gives the XF a remarkable ride feel. It is available in six trim levels, with four engine options, and rear wheel or all wheels, so you can decide exactly what you are looking for.
Compared to other luxury sedans, the 2018 Jaguar XF has more grandeur and charisma. Its shift selector rises from the center console as you turn on the engine, and interior materials and colors are generally warm and inviting. Its styling is classy and blows over its price tag. And in terms of size, it’s equivalent in interior space, but one of the best when it comes to trunks volume.
If there is any shortage, it will be an infotainment system, more specific, poor smartphone integration and build quality that does not meet the standards set by the class. But overall, the 2018 Jaguar XF is a great package: stylish, roomy and fun to drive.
Trim levels and features
The 2018 Jaguar XF is a midsize luxury sedan offered in six trim levels: base, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport, Portfolio and S.
Standard features for the base XF trim include 18-inch wheels, LED running lights, LED taillights, automatic xenon headlights, automatic wipers, a sunroof, nighttime approach lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button ignition, a power-adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel with shift paddles, eight-way power front seats, leatherette upholstery, a 5-inch driver information display, Bluetooth connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an 11-speaker Meridian sound system with a USB port and HD radio. Also standard is the JaguarDrive Control, a feature that allows drivers to select various modes adjusting the steering, throttle response and transmission shift characteristics to best suit the current road conditions.
The Premium trim adds auto-dimming side mirrors, power-folding mirrors, a power-adjustable steering column, driver-seat memory settings, a 40/20/40-split folding rear seat and a rearview camera. The Prestige trim upgraded to 19-inch wheels, keyless entry and ignition, front and rear parking sensors, blue interior accent lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats with four-way power lumbar, leather upholstery, smartphone-app integration, voice controls and a navigation system.
The 2018 Jaguar XF R-Sport trim gets different 19-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, a rear spoiler, automatic high-beam control, forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, sport-themed exterior and interior styling accents, sport front seats, contrasting seat stitching and satellite radio.
The Portfolio trim features a head-up display, a configurable ambient lighting system, heated and cooled front seats, 18-way power-adjustable seats with four-way lumbar support, heated rear seats, an 825-watt Meridian surround-sound system and a larger 10.2-inch touchscreen.
The 2018 Jaguar XF S trim gets a more powerful engine, 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers, unique exterior styling flourishes with gloss black and satin chrome accents, special interior trim, front passenger seat memory and 12-way power front seats. Also standard are both Adaptive and Configurable Dynamics systems, which adjusts suspension on the fly and allows you to configure vehicle systems individually.
A few optional packages are available for most the 2018 Jaguar XF. The Vision Assist package adds adaptive LED headlights with auto high-beam assist, blind-spot warning, front collision mitigation, front and rear parking sensors, and lane departure warning. The Technology package upgrades to 10.2 inches screen plus navigation, the 825-watt Meridian surround-sound system and 12.3-inch driver digital display. The Cold Climate package adds heated front and rear seats, steering wheel, washer jets and windshield.
The 2018 Jaguar XF offers three different engine choices. The base and Portfolio trims can be equipped with either a 2.0-liter turbodiesel or a new 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline. The turbodiesel produces 180 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque, while the gasoline is rated at 247 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque.
The Premium trims and up also offer a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. In the S trim its generates 380 hp, and 340 hp in all others, and 332 lb-ft of torque in both cases. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard with either engine, and all trims can be had in either rear- or all-wheel drive.
The standard All-Surface Progress Control system helps the 2018 Jaguar XF moving in low-traction condition. When involved, you set a target speed with the cruise control, and the XF selectively applies power to maximize traction. Adaptive Surface Response mode senses the quality of the surface on which you’re driving and adjusts the brakes, throttle, stability control and transmission for optimal grip.
In performance testing, the 2018 Jaguar XF 20d Diesel AWD accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds. The rear-drive XFs with the lower power rating do zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, while the S trim shaves a tenth of a second.
The EPA rates the 2018 Jaguar XF rear-wheel-drive at 24 mpg combined (20 city/30 highway) for both V6 engine tunes, while all-wheel drive yields 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway). The diesel are excellent with 35 mpg combined (31 city/32 highway) for rear-wheel drive and 34 mpg combined (30 city/40 highway) for AWD. The new four-cylinder gasoline rated at 28 mpg combined (25 city/34 highway) with RWD and 27 mpg combined (23 city/33 highway) with AWD.
From starter button to its motorized rotary gear selector, the 2018 Jaguar XF inspires the start of every drive with a little theater and charm. High-quality materials and well-finished extend throughout the interior, like most cars in this class. The cabin space is also spacious, offering taller rear seat passengers a more headroom than rivals like the Audi A6, for example, while maintaining the XF sleek and low-roof profile.
The standard InControl Touch infotainment system has an 8-inch touchscreen, while the optional “Pro” version has a 10.2-inch touchscreen and replaces the gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch configurable display. Here the 2018 Jaguar XF falls short, because this infotainment system lacks speed and improvement like competitor system. The screen, controls and menu buttons are easy to use, but the system response is slow.
Interestingly, the 2018 Jaguar XF trunk space is abundant at 19.1 cubic feet, a figure that makes it tops in its class. With wide and deep space, you will have no trouble loading luggage, golf bags, strollers, or monthly grocery items. A split-folding backrest with pass-through door allows for easy transport of longer items.
