Although the BMW Series 2 has reached the middle age of the current generation, it remains a strong competitor among the entry-level luxury sports coupe and convertible. Inheriting elements taken from the more expensive models in the BMW lineup, the 2018 Series 2 offers many features at affordable prices, powerful engine performance regardless of which one you choose, the style and the perfection expected from BMW.

This is fun to drive, whether excited or just in everyday use. Unlike some models in this class that sacrifice comfort for handling, the 2018 BMW Series 2 delivers both at an impressive level. Simply put, it’s a must-test if you’re in the market.

Trim and Features

The 2018 BMW 2 Series is compact entry-level luxury coupe or convertible. It’s offered in two trim levels: 230i and M240i, which are mainly distinguished by engines.

Standard features for the 2018 BMW 230i coupe include 17-inch wheels, LED foglights, LED headlights, automatic wipers, keyless entry and ignition, selectable drive modes, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, driver memory settings, power-adjustable front sport seats, simulated leather upholstery, 60/40-split folding rear seats, a 6.5-inch infotainment screen with iDrive control, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, BMW ConnectedDrive telematics, a USB input and a seven-speaker sound system with HD radio and a CD player. The 230i convertible adds a mesh wind deflector and a power-folding fabric top.

The 2018 BMW 240i coupe or convertible adds an adaptive suspension, a sport exhaust, a rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, sporty exterior flourishes, a sunroof (coupe only), an auto-dimming driver-side and rearview mirror, satellite radio and a universal garage door opener.

Most of the 240i extra features are available as options on the 230i. The Driving Assistance package adds a speed limit display, lane departure warning and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

The Premium package adds a heated steering wheel, heated front seat, an instrument panel with added information, a navigation system, remote control smartphone app.

Other options include 19-inch wheels with summer performance tires, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a wireless charging pad and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.

Engine Specs

Every 2018 BMW 2 Series comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system is available as an option for all models and a six-speed manual is available as a no-cost option on rear-wheel-drive models except for the 230i convertible.

The 2018 BMW 2 Series is offered with a choice of two different engines. The 230i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. In performance testing, the 2018 BMW 230i xDrive coupe accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

EPA estimated fuel economy for the 230i coupe manual at 25 mpg combined (21 city/32 highway) and 28 mpg combined (24 city/35 highway) for the automatic. The 230i convertible stand at 27 mpg combined (24 city/34 highway). All-wheel-drive versions of the 230i coupe and 230i convertible rated at (27/24/33) and (27/23/33).

The 2018 BMW M240i comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that generates 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. BMW estimates this powertrain will launch the M240i from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds.

EPA fuel economy for the M240i coupe automatic at 24 mpg combined (21 city/30 highway) and 22 mpg combined (19 city/28 highway) with the manual transmission. The M240i convertible is rated at 24 mpg combined (21 city/32 highway). The M240i coupe or convertible gets (25/21/31) with all-wheel drive.

Inside the 2018 BMW 2 Series, you will find highly customized sports chairs that provide good support in exciting driving and high comfort for long trips. And as you expect from a car of this size, the backseat is narrow and makes them most suitable for small children or a place to store backpacks, purse or jackets.

In terms of atmosphere, the 2018 BMW 2 Series cabin is attractive, wrapped with good quality materials and functional design. Hardtop model is very quiet inside. The BMW iDrive infotainment system on a standard 6.5-inch screen (or an optional 8.8-inch screen) controls the various vehicle systems. It responds quickly, although in its use it takes some turning control buttons and a few extra clicks to complete common tasks.

On the back, the 2 Series hardtop offers a decent-sized trunk with 13.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The convertible trunk with just about 9 cubic feet.

Release Date and Price

The 2018 BMW 2 Series is on sale and arriving now at dealers nationwide. Key competitors include the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, Cadillac ATS and Audi A3.

Official prices start from $34,800 for the 230i coupe and $40,600 for the convertible. The M240i coupe price starts from $45,300 and the convertible at $51,900.
